A committee comprising 10 members has been formed to assist the activities of the administrator appointed to the apparel apex body—BGMEA.

The Bangladesh Garment Manufacturers and Exporters Association (BGMEA) issued a notification on Thursday night announcing the names of the members.

The notification, signed by its newly appointed administrator, MD Anwar Hossain, also mentioned that the committee has been formed in line with the provision of 18/2 (Ka) of the Trade Organizations Act, 2022.

According to the notification, the members are Md Shahidullah Azim of Classic Fashion Concept Ltd, Enamul Haque Khan Bablu of Ananta Clothing Ltd, Miran Ali of Misami Garments Ltd, M Mohiuddin Chowdhury of Clifton Fashion Ltd, and Asif Ashraf of Urmi Garments Ltd.

The rest include Rezwan Selim of Softex Cotton Ltd, ANM Saifuddin of MS Wearing Apparels Ltd, MD Shihabuddouza Chowdhury of Emity Design Ltd, Shams Mahmood of Shasha Garments Ltd, and Sharif Zahir of Ananta Apparels Ltd.

Sources said the 10-member committee includes five members from both panels of BGMEA—Sammilito Parishad and Forum—that contest its elections.

Earlier, on October 20, the interim government appointed Export Promotion Bureau (EPB) Vice Chairman Md Anwar Hossain as the administrator of BGMEA.

The Ministry of Commerce issued a circular in this regard, dissolving the Board of BGMEA in line with provision 17 of the Trade Organizations Act, 2022.

According to the commerce ministry circular, the administrator will hold a free and fair election within 120 days and hand over the responsibilities to the newly elected body of BGMEA.

On August 24, Designtex Group Managing Director Khandoker Rafiqul Islam was elected as the president of BGMEA following the resignation of SM Mannan Kochi.

Mannan Kochi was elected BGMEA president on March 14 for the term of 2024-26.

The BGMEA board then elected Rafiqul Islam as the president of the trade body for the remaining period of the term.

In August, during a press conference, a group of BGMEA members, led by one of its panel forums, demanded the dissolution of the current board of the trade body, alleging that BGMEA failed to provide proper directives to its members, who faced difficulties operating factories during the students' movement, and especially after the turmoil stemming from the government change, labour unrest, and flood situation.
