Around 100 metric tonnes (114,000 kilogrammes) of green chilli was imported in a single day through four land ports from India on Sunday, according to sources at ports.

The shipments of the essential kitchen item entered Bangladesh following the government's permission of importing 36,830 tonnes of green chilli to curb steep price hike, according to BSS.

Three institutions imported 38,671 kilogrammes of green chili through Sonamasjid and Hili land ports on that day. Due to Eid-ul-Azha and weekend holidays, import remained stopped for five days from Tuesday to Saturday.

Price of green chilli at wholesale market in Bogura became normal with a rise in supply after beginning of imports since June 26.

Green chilli is being sold at Tk 100 to Tk 150 per kg on the basis of quality at wholesale level, said importer Parimal Prashad Raj of Bogura.

He hoped price will fall further after arrival of green chilli shipments from India.

Bogura's Raja Bazar wholesale traders said Indian chilli will reach by Tuesday through Hili port and then price will fall further. Many trucks are waiting to enter Bangladesh through Hili port today.

Bogura district town's kitchen market businessmen said earlier 5 tonnes of green chilli came to wholesale marker every day. But price hiked as supply of green chilli was lesser than demand.

Bogura district agricultural extension department's deputy director Matlubur Rahman said green chilli plants were damaged massively during the last dry season but now the district sees massive production.

Now supply will increase as workers are spending busy time in harvesting green chili.
