Bangladesh is going to import additional 100,000 tonnes of sugar soon amid reports of a supply crunch of the essential commodity in the local market.

The Department of Communications and Publications of Bangladesh Bank gave the information in a statement on Sunday.

The central bank said there is no supply crunch of the commodity this year, comparing the previous year. It also stressed monitoring to stabilise the market.

According to a FE report, the sugar market remained volatile for consecutive three days as of Saturday despite random drives by government agencies across the country.

The essential was sold at Tk 100-120 in different city areas against the government-set rate of Tk 90-95 a kg, according to kitchen market and grocery sources.

Fifty teams of the Directorate of National Consumer Rights Protection (DNCRP) conducted drives on the day.
