29pc work on buffer fertiliser warehouses complete

The government has started construction of 13 buffer godowns at a cost of about Tk 6.16 billion.

The aim of the project is to increase the stock of fertiliser during the peak season and properly distribute it among the dealers for supply to the farmers quickly.

The duration of the project taken up to build these buffer warehouses in different districts for preservation and distribution of fertiliser is from July 2017 to June 2020. Bangladesh Chemical Industries Corporation (BCIC) is implementing the project.

The Executive Committee of the National Economic Council (ECNEC) approved the project in November 2018.

The 13 buffer warehouses will be built on 50.908 acres of land in various districts. The authority concerned has already completed about 29 per cent work on the project.

The allocation for the fiscal year 2019-20 is Tk 2.0 billion. The cumulative expenditure on the project is Tk 1.74 billion as of July 2019.

The industries ministry presented a progress report on the buffer godown construction project to the parliamentary standing committee on industries ministry at its 4th meeting held at Parliament on August 25.

Earlier, the committee asked the ministry to submit a report on the latest situation of the buffer godown construction project at its 3rd meeting which was held on June 27 this year.

The districts where the warehouses will be built are: Panchagarh, Nilphamari, Sherpur, Sunamganj, Kishoreganj, Pabna, Gaibandha, Chapainawabganj, Jashore, Rajbari, Netrakona, Gopalganj and Barishal.

BCIC has acquired 3.80 acres of land in Nilphamari and handed over it to Sena Kalyan Sangstha. Thirty per cent of land development work had been completed while the overall progress was 35 per cent.

In Chapainawabganj, 3.92 acres of land were acquired and handed over to Sena Kalyan Sangstha. Fifty per cent land development work had been completed and the overall progress was 45 per cent.

In Panchagarh, Sherpur and Netrakona, 3.91 acres, 3.80 acres and 4.44 acres of land were acquired respectively while 40 per cent, 30 per cent and 30 per cent of land development work had been completed.

In Kishoreganj, 3.80 acres of land were acquired and 25 per cent land development work had been completed. In Pabna, 3.80 acres of land were acquired and 50 per cent land development work had been completed.

In Jashore, Gaibandha, Rajbari, Sunamganj, Gopalganj and Barishal, some 3.80 acres, 4.28 acres, 3.80 acres, 3.80 acres, 3.80 acres and 4.25 acres of land were acquired respectively. But 30 per cent of land development work had been completed in Jashore, 20 per cent in Gaibandha, 40 per cent in Rajbari, 10 per cent in Sunamganj, 20 per cent in Gopalganj and 10 per cent in Barishal respectively.

All the land acquired by BCIC had been handed over to Sena Kalyan Sangstha.
