3.7m out of 10m family card holders of TCB are fake: Commerce adviser

SK Bashir Uddin, commerce adviser to the interim government, has said that out of 10 million family card holders of Trading Corporation of Bangladesh (TCB), 3.7 million are fake.
He said this at a symposium on the White Paper Formulation Committee 2024, economic management, reforms and national budget at BICC in the capital's Agargaon on Saturday (January 18), as per local media reports.
The trade adviser said, "The movement has taken place because inequality has been created in the society. This can be eliminated by changing the policy. ’
On taxes, he said, "Both direct and indirect taxes are important. And even more important is to enforce it. ’
Despite the economic slowdown, the banks made unethical profits in December last year, which should be investigated, the trade adviser said.
Dr Debapriya Bhattacharya, distinguished fellow of the Centre for Policy Dialogue (CPD) and head of the white paper formulation committee, criticised the decision to hike VAT.
