3rd US wheat shipment reaches Mongla

A fresh consignment of wheat from the United States has arrived at the outer anchorage of Mongla Port, marking the third shipment under the government-to-government (G2G) purchase deal.

The vessel, MV WECO TATI, is carrying 60,875 tonnes of wheat under cash purchase contract G to G-01, signed as part of a broader memorandum of understanding between the two governments.

Bangladesh began importing wheat under this arrangement to ensure a stable supply, diversify its sourcing, and meet rising domestic demand.

With the latest consignment, the country has so far received 0.178 million tonnes of wheat against the contracted 0.44 million tonnes.

The two earlier consignments - 56,959 tonnes and 60,802 tonnes - arrived on October 25 and November 3 respectively.

Officials said initial sampling of the newly arrived wheat has been completed, while laboratory testing is now in progress to confirm quality standards. Once testing is finalised, unloading will begin without delay.

The food ministry said the G2G programme will bolster the country's food security buffer and support the government's public food distribution schemes.

After discharge, port officials said, the wheat will be transported to government storage facilities for distribution under various food-related programmes.
