A total of 468 tonnes of potatoes have been imported from India via the Benapole Land Port in Jashore.

The consignment is set to be cleared on Saturday (today), reports bdnews24.com.

On Thursday evening, a cargo train carrying the potatoes entered the port's railway station from India’s Petrapole Port, said Station Master Saiduzzaman.

"Atif Export, an exporter from India's Malda, shipped the potatoes, while Tata Traders from Rajshahi’s Chapainawabganj is the importer," he added.

The station master continued, "The cargo train carried 9,460 bags of potatoes. The shipment's import value is $107,640, with a price of Tk 27.60 per kg."

Nazmul Arefin Jony, a representative of Alam and Sons, a clearing and forwarding agent at the port, said: "The documents for customs clearance will be submitted to Benapole Customs House on Saturday.”

He added, “Once the customs and railway procedures are completed, the potatoes will be unloaded at either Benapole Port or Noapara. From Noapara, the potatoes will be distributed to Dhaka, Chattogram, and other parts of the country."

Abu Taher, a revenue official at the Cargo Branch of Benapole Customs House, said: “The consignment of potatoes arrived from Jalandhar in Punjab. Once the importer submits the required documentation, the clearance process will be expedited.”
