Fifty per cent of the plastic goods manufacturing factories in the country were found as non-compliance in fire, and health safety, according to a survey.

Furthermore, 49 per cent of the factories were found non-compliance electrical safety, 40 per cent were non-compliance in structural safety, 40 factories were non-compliance in environmental safety, and 34 per cent were non-compliance in machine safety.

However, 97 per cent of the factories were tagged as compliant with chemical or explosive safety.

The picture was found in a recent audit report shared at a validation workshop titled ‘Factory Audit on Hazard Identification, Risk Assessment and Control’ held on Wednesday in CIRDAP Auditorium in the city.

The Plastic Products Business Promotion Council (PPBPC) and Bangladesh Plastic Goods Manufacturers, and Export Association (BPGMEA) jointly organised the workshop.

A total of 13 factories were audited in the survey. Six survey areas were audited including structural safety, fire and health safety, electrical safety, machine safety, environmental safety, and chemical or explosive safety.

BPGMEA President Shamim Ahmed addressed the event and spoke for awareness among manufacturers. Commerce Secretary Tapan Kanti Ghosh was present at the event as the chief guest.

The BPGMEA, however, claimed that during the audit of industrial establishments, it found that most of the industrial establishments were shown as non-compliant due to minor flaws.

The workshop called for increased awareness among industrialists and more investments to increase safety.

The workshop recommended assessing BPGMEA all member factories to identify safety risks, post evaluation, and follow-up for continuous monitoring and continual improvement.

Form a safety cell to implement and monitor BPGMEA member factory occupational health and safety, and form a technical expert panel (fire, electrical, structural, compliance) to advise the member factory for ensuring workplace safety, it recommended.

It also suggested appointing an inspection firm for member factory safety equipment regularly (monthly) inspection, to set a sustainable strategic action plan for at least 5 years.
