Bangladesh Submarine Cables PLC (BSCPLC) has reached a significant milestone, with its real-time internet traffic capacity hitting 4 terabytes per second (Tbps) as of 1 August 2025, according to a company press release.
The state-run bandwidth provider added the latest terabyte in just three months, having crossed the 3 Tbps mark on 28 April. In contrast, the previous increase of 1.1 Tbps took eight months -- underscoring a sharp acceleration in growth.
Since the beginning of the current government's term, BSCPLC's total supply has expanded by more than 2.2 Tbps, representing a year-on-year increase of over 105 per cent.
This growth stands in stark contrast to the previous administration, under which more than 65 per cent of the company's capacity reportedly remained unused.
The recent surge in capacity has been driven by strategic policy shifts, competitive pricing reforms, and renewed operational momentum under new leadership.
The Bangladesh Telecommunication Regulatory Commission (BTRC) has also played a crucial role, mandating that international internet gateway (IIG) operators source at least 50 per cent of their bandwidth from submarine cable providers.
As a result, BSCPLC now supplies more than half of the bandwidth consumed by IIGs across the country.
To support this rapid expansion, the company has introduced special pricing models for cloud service providers and data centres, along with bulk discounts for high-volume users. These initiatives have significantly boosted both capacity utilisation and revenue.
Further strengthening the nation's digital infrastructure, the government has approved revised routes for the SEA-ME-WE 4, SEA-ME-WE 5, and SEA-ME-WE 6 submarine cable systems. Upon completion, these systems are expected to add another 17 Tbps to BSCPLC's real-time internet capacity.
