The central bank has allowed Bangladeshi residents to purchase air tickets from airlines operating within the country using international cards, aiming to ensure competitive pricing and improve customer convenience.
“To facilitate fair pricing, convenience and market competitiveness, it has been decided that resident Bangladeshi nationals, having visas where applicable, may use their international cards for purchase of air tickets from airlines operating in Bangladesh for travelling abroad,” the Bangladesh Bank (BB) said in a notification on Wednesday.
The central bank’s latest move aims to ease the difficulties travellers often face in securing tickets at competitive prices due to the absence of international card-based settlement options within Bangladesh.
Previously, the use of international cards was allowed only for overseas travel-related purchases, according to BB officials.
However, many travellers have reportedly faced difficulty purchasing tickets at competitive prices within Bangladesh due to limited digital settlement options, they said, adding that new policy aims to eliminate these market constraints.
Under the revised rules, resident Bangladeshis holding appropriate visas may now use their international cards to buy outbound air tickets directly from airlines operating in Bangladesh — for example, on routes such as Dhaka–Singapore or Dhaka–Dubai, etc..
