Moynul Islam, president of the Bangladesh Ceramic Manufacturers and Exporters Association (BCMEA), has underscored the need for good governance to ensure sustainable growth of the country’s ceramic industry.
“Without improving governance, nothing will improve. When I look at reform opportunities and challenges ahead, governance reform must come first,” he said.
He made the remarks while speaking at a roundtable titled “Business Climate: Reforms, Opportunities, and Challenges Ahead” on Monday.
The Financial Express (FE) organised the discussion at Lakeshore Heights in Dhaka, bringing together policymakers, private sector leaders, economists, and representatives from think tanks.
Lutfey Siddiqi, special envoy on international affairs to the chief adviser, attended the event as the chief guest, while Md Anwar Hossain, secretary of the Ministry of Science and Technology, and Mohammad Hasan Arif, vice chairman of the Export Promotion Bureau (EPB), were present as special guests.
Referring to ceramic goods, Moynul Islam said, “I call this a ‘dumb product’ because it doesn’t make any sound, yet we use it every day without realising its importance — and it’s very difficult to produce.”
Hasnat Alam, economist at the Policy Exchange of Bangladesh, presented the keynote paper at the roundtable on behalf of Dr Masrur Reaz.
Shamsul Huq Zahid, editor and CEO of The Financial Express, chaired the session, while Shiabur Rahman Shihab, head of online and digital content at FE, moderated the discussion.
