The interim government has extended the tenure of Bangladesh Garment Manufacturers and Exporters Association (BGMEA) Administrator Md Anwar Hossain, who is also vice chairman of the Export Promotion Bureau (EPB), by four months.

As per a circular issued by the commerce ministry recently, the BGMEA administrator's tenure has been extended until June 16 this year, with effect from February 17.

The decision was taken with an aim to facilitate the biennial election of the trade body.

Following the resignation of the association's president SM Mannan Kochi on August 24 last year, Md Anwar Hossain was appointed as BGMEA administrator on October 20 following a mass uprising.

According to UNB, the Trade Organization Division of the commerce ministry issued an official order extending his term. The letter regarding the extension stated that although an election schedule was announced, the administrator sought an extension, citing the inability to initiate and complete the electoral process within the stipulated time due to various reasons.

The extension comes with two conditions:

The election to the BGMEA Board of Directors must be conducted as per the organisation’s Memorandum and Articles of Association.

The election must be completed at least 15 days before the end of the extended term, ensuring a smooth handover to the elected board.
