Mahmud Hasan Khan-led panel Forum on Sunday unveiled its nine-point strategic proposals as a commitment ahead of the biennial election of the Bangladesh Garment Manufacturers and Exporters Association (BGMEA) for the term of 2025-27.

The proposals include developing an exit policy, ensuring accountability of elected members, and diversification of both markets and products to address global challenges and help flourish the country’s readymade garment sector.

Forum is one of the other two panels—Sammilito Parishad and Oikkyo Parishad--that are contesting the biennial election of the apparel apex body. The BGMEA election is scheduled to take place on May 31.

At a press conference held at a city hotel on Sunday, Mr Khan expressed commitment to implement the proposals if his panel gets a mandate in the election.

According to the proposals, Forum will work to set up an independent ministry for the garment sector to look into the issues related to the industry that earns largest or more than 84 per cent of the country’s foreign currency while creating employment for about four million workers, mostly women.

It would also prioritise labour-related issues, safety, and environmental aspects while working to ensure membership of real exporters, saying there are now more than 7000 members of BGMEA.

Other proposals included measures mostly arranging fund to help small and medium enterprises, non-bonded units, and new entrepreneurs, and automation of customs.
