Bangladesh Garment Manufacturers and Exporters Association (BGMEA) on Sunday said buyers have so far cancelled orders worth US$ 3.15 billion following the outbreak of coronavirus.
So far, 1,134 factories reported that 975.20 million pieces of RMG products worth US$ 3.15 billion have either been cancelled or held up until 10am on Sunday.
This cancellation will affect approximately 2.25 million Bangladeshi workers, BGMEA said.
Earlier on April 2, BGMEA reported cancellation of US$ 3 billion following the outbreak, UNB reported.
Before that BGMEA President Dr Rubana Huq on March 23 informed that buyers so far cancelled orders worth US$ 1.48 billion.
In a video message, she said: “We’re facing a dire situation. All the buyers from different places, countries and continents are suspending the orders.”
The BGMEA and Bangladesh Knitwear Manufacturers and Exporters Association (BKMEA) in a joint statement on Friday announced closure of all factories until April 25.
They urged the factory authorities to inform the respective trade bodies if any factory office remains open for disbursing wages and other payments during the period.
