The Bangladesh Garment Manufacturers and Exporters Association (BGMEA) has sought the support of Intertek to strengthen technology transfer and enhance the skills of workers and management staff in the apparel sector, particularly to boost competitiveness and sustainability.

The call came during a meeting between Intertek Bangladesh's Regional Managing Director for South Asia Ajay Kapur and BGMEA Senior Vice-President Inamul Haque Khan at the BGMEA Complex in the capital's Uttara on Wednesday.

BGMEA directors Nafis-ud-Doula and Jowardar Mohammad Hosne Komar Alam, along with Coordinator of the Responsible Business Hub Sheikh Suchita Jahan Sneha, were present.

From Intertek, Regional CFO for South Asia Ashish Gupta, Country Managing Director Neyamul Hasan, and Head of Sales, Business Development and CRM Aliza Sultana attended the meeting.

During the discussion, Mr Khan outlined the current challenges facing the apparel industry.

He also highlighted the BGMEA's expectations from Intertek, particularly in the use of its Assurance, Testing, Inspection and Certification (ATIC) services across the supply chain.

Mr Khan said the BGMEA is keen to work with Intertek to make the industry more sustainable by facilitating the use of digital platforms and providing regular training for workers and management staff to upgrade their skills.

Such initiatives, he noted, would help Bangladesh's apparel sector become more competitive and trusted in global markets. Reiterating BGMEA's strong commitment to upholding social and environmental compliance standards, he sought Intertek's cooperation to establish a comprehensive framework for the garment sector.

He also praised Intertek's longstanding contribution to the industry and stressed the need to explore new areas of collaboration.

Mr Kapur said Bangladesh's apparel industry plays a highly significant role in the global market.

"We are committed to strengthening our partnership with the BGMEA, with the aim of enhancing business standards and the capacity of its members by providing world-class services."

Both sides agreed to explore new opportunities for joint efforts, stressing the importance of close cooperation, knowledge sharing, and collective action to make supply chains more transparent and sustainable.
