A big hilsa weighing 2.8 kilograms (just under 3 kg) was sold for Tk 13,000 at the Port Road Fish Landing Centre in Barishal on Thursday morning, creating a buzz among traders and shoppers alike.
As news of the rare catch spread quickly, curious onlookers gathered at the market to catch a glimpse of the fish which is being dubbed one of the largest hilsa seen in the region this season.
Amzad Talukder, a local businessman, expressed delight over his purchase.
“In my childhood, hilsa of this size was quite common. But nowadays it’s rare to find such big hilsa. I’m very happy to have bought it.”
Milon Sikder, a fish trader, said, “It’s rare to find hilsa of this size in the current season though occasionally one or two big ones are caught,” he said.
The hilsa was netted by local fishermen from the Tetulia River in Barishal district.
