BRAC Bank facilitated over 5,000 free kidney dialysis sessions in 2024 for patients from underserved communities at Kidney Foundation Hospital Sylhet (KFS), according to a press release.
Through its flagship CSR health initiative Aporajeyo Ami, the bank is making lifesaving dialysis accessible to those who cannot afford it — a vision inspired by Sir Fazle Hasan Abed, founder of BRAC and BRAC Bank. In his honour, KFS has dedicated an entire floor as the Sir Fazle Hasan Abed Kidney Dialysis Centre, supported annually by BRAC Bank.
Currently, 120 patients receive treatment with the bank’s support, with most of their sessions provided free of charge. As dialysis is a continuous process, free sessions are allocated based on financial capability, ensuring the most vulnerable benefit most.
Dialysis in Bangladesh typically costs BDT 2,000–3,000 per session, with patients often needing multiple sessions weekly over months or years — a financial burden for low-income families.
BRAC Bank’s support began in 2019, when it became the first organisation to donate dialysis machines to KFS, providing four units to expand capacity.
The bank has also established a fully operational oxygen plant at the hospital, supplying medical-grade oxygen essential for surgeries, ICUs, and critical treatment processes. It supports clean air delivery, breathing assistance, anaesthesia administration, and other vital hospital functions, enabling timely, life-saving care.
Meheriar M. Hasan, Chairperson of BRAC Bank, said: “Sir Fazle Hasan Abed believed essential healthcare should never be a matter of privilege. This initiative carries that vision forward through sustained, tangible action.”
Colonel Mohammad Abdus Salam, BP (Retd.), General Secretary of KFS, added: “BRAC Bank’s support ensures no patient is turned away for lack of means, strengthening our capacity and our mission of equitable care.”
Looking ahead, BRAC Bank aims to support an additional 4,000 free dialysis sessions this year, continuing its commitment to serve with dignity, care, and impact.
