BRAC Bank, in collaboration with Water.org, organised the first-ever National Water Supply & Sanitation (WSS) Workshop in the banking sector to raise awareness on water, sanitation and hygiene (WASH) financing.

The workshop was held on October 9 and 10 at Cox’s Bazar, according to a press release.

The event brought together senior leaders from BRAC Bank and Water.org, as well as key stakeholders from across the country, to review progress on the WSS financing initiative, exchange knowledge, and develop innovative strategies to expand access to safe water and sanitation through WASH financing.

BRAC Bank became the first financial institution in Bangladesh to introduce WSS financing in partnership with Water.org in June 2024. Since then, the bank has been facilitating access to formal credit for water and sanitation solutions, empowering small entrepreneurs, microfinance institutions, and rural communities to improve living standards and public health outcomes.

A dynamic fireside chat engaged senior leadership in a thought-provoking discussion on the intersection of sustainability, finance and social impact.

The panel included Tareq Refat Ullah Khan, Managing Director & CEO; Syed Abdul Momen, AMD & Head of SME Banking; M. Masud Rana, FCA, AMD & CFO; and Md. Sabbir Hossain, DMD & COO from BRAC Bank and Sajid Amit, Executive Director, South Asia from Water.org.

The workshop also featured informative training sessions, progress updates from SME leaders and an interactive quiz designed to engage participants. Top contributors from Small Business, Medium Business and MFI Finance divisions were honoured for their performance in promoting WSS financing.

Co-founded by Matt Damon and Gary White, Water.org is a global nonprofit organisation working to bring water and sanitation to the world.

The sessions highlighted Water.org’s mission, global case studies on the impact of WSS, and innovative financing mechanisms for water and sanitation projects.

Participants had the opportunity to network, share success stories and reaffirm their commitment to driving sustainable change.

Tareq Refat Ullah Khan remarked, “We believe access to clean water and sanitation is not just a basic human right—it is the foundation for economic and social progress. By pioneering water and sanitation financing in partnership with Water.org, we aim to build an inclusive banking model that uplifts lives and communities across Bangladesh. This initiative reflects our enduring commitment to sustainability, innovation and inclusive growth.”
