The prices of broiler chicken, edible oil, and vegetables moved up again this week, further increasing burden on consumers.
Broiler chicken prices went up by Tk 10 per kilogram in city markets, reaching Tk 190-195 per kg on Thursday, a weekly increase of Tk 10-15 per kg.
Sonali and Pakistani chicken varieties were sold for Tk 300-320 a kg, up by Tk 20 per kg.
Mozahar Ahmed, a chicken vendor, mentioned that demand for chicken has surged in many districts due to people consuming less beef amid anthrax fears, especially in Rajshahi and Rangpur divisions. This shift in demand has impacted the overall market.
Edible oil prices also rose by Tk 5-10 per litre. Loose soybean oil was sold for Tk 180-185 per litre, bottled at Tk 190-195 per litre, while palm oil cost Tk 170-175 per litre. Refiners noted that international prices of edible oil have significantly risen over the past year and requested the government to adjust local prices accordingly.
They initially announced a planned price hike of Tk 5-13 per litre on October 13, which was later halted by the commerce ministry. A ministry official mentioned that a final review of costs is currently underway, and a decision may be made in a few days.
Vegetable prices continued to increase: brinjal at Tk 120-140 per kg, bitter gourd at Tk 100-110, pointed gourd at Tk 90-100, okra at Tk 100-110, long-yard beans at Tk 110-120, teasel gourd at Tk 90-100, ridge gourd at Tk 80-90 per kg, snake gourd at Tk 80-90 per kg, and tomatoes at Tk 140-160 per kg.
Meanwhile, prices of rice, fish, onions, and eggs remained mostly unchanged, maintaining their previous highs.
