Employees of the Bangladesh Securities and Exchange Commission, or BSEC, have resumed work a day after they announced a work stoppage over a list of demands, including the resignation of the agency’s Chairman Khondoker Rashed Maqsood.
The staff started work in their respective departments at the scheduled office time at the capital market regulator’s main office in Agargaon on Sunday.
The BSEC chairman and three commissioners also arrived at the commission on time and started their regular work, according to a bdnews24.com report.
After two days of agitation, the BSEC office is now “calm and quiet”. There are no protests and visitors are able to enter the office through the main gate.
On Thursday, the Bangladesh Securities and Exchange Commission Officers Welfare Association announced that it would continue its work stoppage.
Mohammad Abul Hasan, convener and director of the association, and Mohammed Miraj Us Sunnah, its secretary, announced a work stoppage on Thursday until their four demands were met.
BSEC Chairman Maqsood and three commissioners entered the commission at 3:00 pm on that day amid the agitation.
They urged everyone to return to work. However, the day ended without a resolution.
Ashikur Rahman, security officer to the BSEC chairman, filed a complaint with the Sher-e-Bangla Nagar Police Station later on Thursday night.
At least 16 BSEC officials and employees, including executive directors, were named in a case for blocking the commission chairman and members for hours at the commission’s office on Wednesday. The list includes Executive Director Saifur Rahman, who has been sent into forced retirement, and existing officials.
The atmosphere completely changed when the chairman entered the commission on Thursday and vowed not to yield to wrongdoings and the case was filed.
The protestors have returned to work without a formal announcement.
None of the officers’ welfare association members agreed to talk to the media.
As tensions eased, a delegation led by Dhaka Stock Exchange Chairman Mominul Islam went to meet the BSEC chairman at 11:00 am on Sunday.
The delegation includes representatives of the Chittagong Stock Exchange, CCA, CDBL, CCBL, and BMBA.
