Broiler chicken became pricier in the city's kitchen markets last week due to its growing demand, according to traders.
Prices of some vegetables also went up while loose soybean oil witnessed a slight decline during the period.
Broiler chicken was sold at Tk 135-145 and layer at Tk 170-180 per kilogramme (kg) on Thursday, a Tk-10 hike in a week.
Md Alam, a vendor at Jafrabad in the city's Rayer Bazar, told the FE that prices of chicken started increasing due to its mounting demand.
He said prices of beef and fish increased notably in the last few weeks which put impacts on the chicken market.
"I bought broiler at Tk 128 a kg from a poultry farm at Kolatia in Keraniganj which was Tk 123-124 a kg seven days back," he said.
Mr Alam dropped a hint that chicken price might go up further in the coming days for its rising demand.
Beef was sold at Tk 500-520, buffalo meat at Tk 460-480, mutton at Tk 700-T820, and Hilsa fish at Tk 800-1,350 per kg on the day based on quality.
Secretary of Consumers Association of Bangladesh (CAB) Humayun Kabir Bhuiyan said the year 2019 has started with price hike of essentials.
Broiler chicken and farm egg are key protein sources for commoners in the city, he said.
"If prices of such items increase, it directly hurts limited income people," he mentioned.
In comparison with staple rice, Mr Bhuiyan said, prices of meat and fish have increased significantly, adding to owes of low-income consumers.
Apart from that, prices of some vegetables - cauliflower, cabbage and brinjal - rose by Tk 5.0-10 a kg or piece in the last seven days.
Loose soybean oil showed a Tk 2.0-3.0 decline in the week as it was sold at Tk 76-78 per litre on Thursday.
