CHATTOGRAM, Jan 01: Chittagong Port, the maritime gateway of Bangladesh, has achieved a historic milestone by handling the highest number of containers in 2025.
The prime seaport handled a total of 3.40 million (34,09,069) TEUs (20-foot equivalent units) of containers, 138.15 million (13,81,51,812) tonnes of cargoes and 4,273 ships during the period.
According to the Chittagong Port Authority (CPA), there has been an increase of 4.07 per cent in container handling, 11.43 per cent in cargo handling and 10.50 percent in ship handling compared to 2024. Earlier in 2024, the port handled a total of 3.27 million TEUs of containers, 123 million tonnes of cargoes and 3,867 ships.
Revenue collection by the port stood at Tk 54.60 billion in 2025, an increase of 7.55 per cent compared to the previous year. Of this amount, the CPA deposited Tk 18.04 billion to the government exchequer, making Chittagong Port one of the government's largest revenue-generating institutions.
CPA Secretary Omar Faruk said that the port broke all previous records in handling containers and cargoes.
He said, "Various infrastructure developments, including port automation service facilities, introduction of e-gate passes, and modernisation of the container operating system, are a significant part of this success. The sincere efforts of the port users and their overall cooperation have contributed significantly to this success. However, had there not been an NBR shutdown for two to three days last year, container handling would have been even higher."
He added, "Chittagong port handles more than 92 per cent of export and import cargoes of Bangladesh and 98 per cent of containers. We have already taken up many development projects for the seaport."
The record-breaking year comes amid signs of recovery in both exports and imports, following a period of economic strain caused by a prolonged dollar crisis. Export volumes have risen steadily, while import activity has normalised, contributing to the port's strong performance.
With this milestone, Chittagong Port reinforces its strategic importance in supporting Bangladesh's export-led growth and ensuring the efficiency of global supply chains linked to the country's thriving readymade garment and manufacturing sectors.
