Chattogram port, the country's principal seaport, has broken a 48-year record by handling the highest number of containers in the 2024-25 fiscal year (FY), according to port officials.
They attributed the achievement to the expansion of jetty and yard facilities, which improved container, cargo, and ship-handling operations.
In the first three months of FY26 (July-September), the Bangladesh Navy-run Chittagong Dry Dock Limited (CDDL) handled 342,649 TEUs at the New Mooring Container Terminal (NCT), 41,754 TEUs more than the same period last fiscal year, reflecting a 13.88 per cent growth in container handling. During the same period, 178 ships were managed at NCT, 26 more than the previous year, marking a 17.11 per cent increase. Authorities said these are the highest volumes ever recorded at the terminal.
Overall, Chattogram port handled 927,713 TEUs of containers in the first quarter of FY26, 101,185 TEUs more than the same period last year, a 12.24 per cent growth. Cargo handling reached 32.92 million tonnes, and 1,031 ships were processed, representing growth of 13.88 per cent and 9.22 per cent, respectively, compared to last year.
Port officials credited the record performance to infrastructure development, enhanced operational efficiency, and better logistics management.
