In a move to mitigate the disruption caused by the recent fire at the Cargo Village of Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport (HSIA), the authorities have announced that Dhaka Customs House will remain operational 24/7 on Friday and Saturday (October 25-26).

An official order issued on Wednesday by Joint Commissioner of Customs, Suman Das, directed all relevant customs personnel to remain on duty during this period to ensure uninterrupted customs clearance services.

The extended operations are aimed at supporting import and export activities and maintaining trade continuity following the fire which severely disrupted air cargo handling facilities.

Earlier on Tuesday, three separate internal orders outlined a detailed work plan for customs officials.

Officers at the Deputy Commissioner and Assistant Commissioner levels will work in rotational shifts-morning, day, and night-while Joint Commissioners will oversee overall operations. Additional revenue staff, including assistant revenue officers, sub-inspectors, and constables, will also be deployed to ensure smooth processing.

According to Wednesday's directive, the extended service specifically applies to the airfreight and express service units, which are critical for handling time-sensitive shipments such as garments, pharmaceuticals, and perishable goods.

Speaking to The Financial Express, Bangladesh Exporters Association President Mohammad Hatem said, "Keeping customs clearance open 24/7 will help smooth business operations to import raw materials urgently."
