Bangladesh Bank Governor Ahsan H. Mansur has said that finding qualified managing directors (MDs) in the country's banking sector has become a major challenge.
Addressing as a special guest a programme marking the 15th anniversary of Financial Excellence Ltd, at The Westin Dhaka on Saturday, the governor expressed his concern over availability of competent leadership in the banking sector.
"It is now very difficult to find qualified MDs," he said. "Even finding a good head of department has become tough-whether in corporate or consumer banking. The shortage of skilled professionals is evident across all areas."
He further noted, "We are not getting MDs with proper knowledge and training. This reflects a kind of failure in the banking sector. As a result, the challenges ahead will be even greater."
Speaking as the chief guest, Finance Adviser Dr. Salehuddin Ahmed said, "Mindset is extremely important. Sometimes trained personnel who are not mentally prepared can do more harm than untrained ones. The next four to five months will bring major challenges for us."
Other speakers at the event stressed the need for developing skilled human resources, promoting technology-driven banking, and ensuring good governance across the sector.
