The Dhaka International Trade Fair (DITF)-2024, a mega event, is likely to be deferred by 15 days due to the upcoming parliamentary election, sources said.

The month-long 28th fair will begin in January next, a commerce ministry summary paper revealed.

Traditionally, the trade fair begins on January 1 every year. The government can defer the date for commencement of the trade fair, if necessary.

The twelfth Parliament Election is likely to be held in the first week of next year or in late December of the current calendar year. So, the government is considering opening of the trade fair on January 15, 2024 or at a convenient time after the elections, an official said.

Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina is expected to attend it as chief guest at the Bangabandhu Bangladesh-China Friendship Exhibition Centre (BBCFEC) in Purbachal of Dhaka.

The ministry of commerce and the Export Promotion Bureau (EPB) will jointly organize the month-long trade fair.

A senior official of the EPB said the trade fair would not start on January 1 as the national election might be held between last week of December, 2023 and first week of 2024.

He, however, said the trade fair would continue until February 15.
