Eastern Bank files Tk 2.0 billion defamation lawsuit against a client

Eastern Bank PLC (EBL), a leading private sector financial institution, has filed a defamation lawsuit against one of its clients, demanding Tk 2.0 billion as compensation, in the First Joint District Judge Court of Dhaka recently.

According to a press release, the court took cognizance of the case and issued a summons against the client, Md. Murtoza Ali.

The press statement said the client, Md. Mortoza Ali, an account holder of Chandgaon Branch, Chattogram of Eastern Bank PLC, out of malicious motives, submitted a petition for filing a case against the board of directors, managing director, and 46 senior officials of Eastern Bank PLC in the Chief Metropolitan Magistrate's Court in Chattogram.

In this petition, Eastern Bank was baselessly accused of embezzling Tk 110 million.

Reports about the petition were published in various media outlets. This has caused confusion among customers and has severely damaged the image of Eastern Bank. As compensation, Eastern Bank has filed this defamation case against Murtoza Ali.
