Eastern Refinery Limited (ERL), the country's only state-owned oil refinery, has established a new record in crude oil refining, as it has processed a total of 1.535 million tonne crude oil in the fiscal year 2024-25 surpassing its previous record of 1.513 million tonne in the fiscal year 2020-21.

Managing Director of ERL engineer Sharif Hasnat said although the ERL has reached a milestone, they are unable to meet the domestic demand for petroleum and oil. "However, a process to construct Eastern Refinery Unit-2 is underway to meet the country's growing demand. The government is arranging funds for this project," he said.

Mr Hasnat further said, "The facility's annual output has occasionally surpassed annual production capacity of 1.5 million in recent years, which is a testament to improvements in its operational efficiency. Several factors contributed to refining more crude oil than the facility's installed capacity, with manpower efficiency being a key one. In addition, an uninterrupted supply of raw materials made it possible to process additional fuel oil."

ERL was established in 1966 in Guptakhal area in the port city. Commercial production at the refinery began on 7 May 1968. The refinery, a subsidiary of Bangladesh Petroleum Corporation (BPC), supplies around 40 per cent of the country's current demand for petroleum products
