Former employees of Grameenphone held a peaceful solidarity programme in front of the company’s GP House in the city on Saturday, marking International Women’s Day and demanding the settlement of long-standing financial claims, according to a press release.
The programme was held under the theme “Indomitable Women’s Power in Protecting Rights.” Male and female former employees joined the gathering, expressing support for women’s dignity, civil rights and their pending financial demands.
Organisers said the former employees have been carrying out a peaceful movement for years demanding payment of a five per cent delayed penalty compensation they claim remains unpaid.
They also referred to an incident on February 25, 2025, when a peaceful human chain held at the same location allegedly faced baton charges, water cannons and rough treatment. In that incident, 11 people, including three women, were arrested and cases were filed against 29 individuals.
Speakers at the programme said that although International Women’s Day symbolises the global struggle for women’s rights and dignity, the suppression of women raising legitimate demands is regrettable. They urged the company to acknowledge responsibility for the incident and take steps toward a fair and humane resolution.
The former employees said their movement would continue peacefully, through legal and democratic means, until their demands are met and justice is ensured.
