Four state-owned commercial banks (SoCBs) are set to provide more than Tk 6.50 billion as loans among tanners to help them purchase rawhides of sacrificial animals during the upcoming Eid-ul-Azha.

The SoCBs, in line with their guidelines, will provide such seasonal loans to regular parties only, officials of the banks said.

Under the existing guidelines, only the parties, who repaid their previous dues, are qualified for getting fresh loans to purchase rawhides.

Those, who failed to repay their previous loans, are not entitled to receive fresh credits for the purpose, they added.

Among the banks, Sonali Bank Limited is set to disburse Tk 700 million to their clients for purchasing rawhides during the Eid, said a senior official of the SoCB.

"Our three parties have submitted their proposals, seeking Tk 700 million loans for procuring rawhides," the official told the FE on Wednesday.

The same amount of loan was given to these parties last year for the purpose, he added. Janata Bank Limited is going to provide Tk 3.0 billion as loans for procuring rawhides during this Eid.

"We've already started disbursement of the loans to the parties concerned," an official of the SoCB told the FE.

The SoCB provided Tk 2.50 billion to 23 parties last year, according to him. Meanwhile, Agarni Bank Limited is set to provide Tk 2.0 billion as loans this year to three parties.

The amount of such loans may rise further in line with the eligible clients' requirements, a senior official of the SoCB hinted.

"We'll disburse the loans on Thursday (today) after getting approval in our board of directors' meeting on Wednesday." Agrani Bank Limited disbursed Tk 600 million in 2016 to only one party for procuring rawhides, he added.

Rupali Bank Limited is set to provide around Tk 850 million to four clients for purchasing rawhides during the upcoming Eid.

Talking to the FE, a senior official of the SoCB said the bank disbursed the same amount of loans to the same parties last year. Besides, Bangladesh Krishi Bank (BKB) and Rajshahi Krishi Unnayan Bank (RAKUB) are set to provide loans of various amounts to their clients for purchasing rawhides during the Eid, sources in banking sector said.
