The commerce ministry on Tuesday sent four teams to seven districts of the country to monitor the price of onion, its stock, supply and production there, officials said.

The districts are: Faridpur, Madaripur, Rajbari, Kushtia, Rajshahi, Pabna and Manikganj.

During their visit to the retail and wholesale markets in these districts, the team members will monitor the market prices of onion and its collection, a source said. They will also take action against hoarding and artificial price hike of the spice if found, he added.

The team members will collect information on different varieties of onion, its sowing and harvesting period as well as the volume of its production etc.

They will come back to Dhaka on December 06 and submit their reports to the commerce secretary.

To this effect, the commerce ministry issued an office order on Tuesday morning.

The prices of onion-- both local and imported varieties-- still remain high at retail level despite import of the spice by the government and private sector since mid-September.

Earlier in October last, the government also sent 10 teams to different districts.
