The government permitted import of green chilli and tomato on Sunday to help stabilise their prices in the market.
The Ministry of Agriculture (MoA) gave the permission against the backdrop of rocketing price trend of the items, as chilli price hit a record high of Tk 280-300 a kg on the day, registering 150 per cent hike in a week.
Tomato was being sold at Tk 120-140 a kg for the last three weeks, according to the kitchen market sources.
A notification issued by the ministry said importers have been permitted to bring 11,600 tonnes of green chilli and 55,600 tonnes of tomato.
