The government has approved the import of 1,500 tonnes of onions from India to tame soaring prices in the local market.
The Department of Agricultural Extension (DAE), under the Ministry of Agriculture, cleared the imports on Sunday, local media report.
A total of 50 import permits (IPs) have been issued. Each importer may bring in up to 30 tonnes and cannot apply twice.
The IPs will remain valid until March 31, 2026. Officials described the move as a temporary response to current market conditions.
The decision comes after retail onion prices jumped above Tk 150 per kg within a week.
DAE Director General S M Sohrab Uddin said 50 IPs have been issued initially “to protect consumers’ interests” and more will be granted if needed.
However, he said import permits would be halted once prices fall, “because we also have to think about the farmers.”
