Total food grain (rice and wheat) import in the country was 4.612 million tonnes as of April 7 this year, said official sources.
As per Ministry of Food data, 186,000 tonnes of rice was imported during that time. Of these, the government imported 65,000 tonnes while the private traders imported 121,000 tonnes.
The wheat import was 4.426 million tonnes. Of them, the government imported 260,000 tonnes while the rest of the amount by the private traders.
Bangladesh set a record of rice import in 2018 which stood slightly over 3.5 million tonnes.
