The government’s rice distribution to 10 million families through the Trading Corporation of Bangladesh (TCB) will start across the country on Sunday (July 16).
Every TCB cardholder family will get 5.0 kilogrammes (kg) of rice at Tk 30 per kg from TCB outlets, along with products like pulses, sugar, and edible oil, said an official at the commerce ministry.
He said the open market sales (OMS) dealers will provide rice along with other subsided products to 10 million households.
The food directorate will deliver rice to the TCB, he said.
He said people could buy sugar at Tk 70 a kg, pulses at Tk 70 a kg, and edible soybean oil at Tk 100 a litre from TCB’s OMS sale.
Now, they could also get rice at a subsidised rate from the outlets across the country, he said.
According to the food ministry, it provides rice to 5.0 million families regularly under its food distribution programmes, where a household gets 30 kg of rice per month.
TCB data showed prices of non-branded parboiled rice have been almost static for the last two months in the country, as coarse rice was selling at Tk 48–52, medium at Tk 60–65, and finer at Tk 65–75 a kg in Dhaka city.
