Green chilli price shot up to Tk 250 a kg on Friday, marking a Tk 50-a-kg fresh hike just in a day.
Beef and few other vegetables also witnessed a hike, augmenting sufferings of the commoners further.
The price of green chilli witnessed a hike almost every day in the last seven days, said Jamal Hossain, a vegetable vendor at Sankar in West Dhanmondi.
Mr Hossain said he was selling chilli at Tk 240-250 a kg as he sourced the item at Tk 220 a kg from the Rayerbazar-Beribadh wholesale hub.
He said the price was Tk 175-180 per kg on Thursday and Tk 120 a kg seven days back.
The supply of green chilli also seemed low, he said.
Atikul Alam, a vegetable wholesaler at Sadeq Khan Krishi Market in Rayerbazar-Beribadh area of the city, said carrying costs have increased three times as truck/pickup van owners are mainly ferrying cattle ahead of the Eid-ul-Azha.
Apart from that, the supply of chilli from Jamalpur, Rangpur, Bogra and other regions has decreased notably while the import has also declined, he said.
Mr Alam said many other vegetables like snake gourd, pointed gourd, ridge gourd, sponge gourd and bitter gourd also witnessed Tk 8.0-10 a kg further hike in the wholesale markets.
There is no possibility that the price will go down before the upcoming Eid, he observed.
Beef price increased further by Tk 40 a kg which traders attributed to the sacrificial festival as cattle owners have minimised the sale of cows in the mainstream meat market and preserved those for the Eid.
Beef was sold at Tk 780-830 a kg on Friday, according to meat sellers in the city's different areas.
