Haribhanga mango becoming famous globally

'Haribhanga aam', a highly tasty local variety of mango, will soon become very famous and popular globally.

"The agriculture researchers, scientists and experts should engage more efforts to further expand and popularise cultivation of Haribhanga mango through disseminating the latest technologies among the farmers," says H N Ashikur Rahman, Chairman of the Parliamentary Standing Committee on the Ministry of Public Administration.

He was addressing as the chief guest a five-day fair for displaying cultivation, technology and success achieved in commercial farming of the highly fleshy, fibreless and tasty local variety Haribhanga mango in Rangpur.

Chairman of Rangpur unit of Bangladesh Red Crescent Society and Member of its Board of Directors Rehana Ashikur Rahman and language movement veteran Majibar Rahman Master addressed as special guests. 

The chief guest visited different stalls after inaugurating the fair where huge Haribhanga mango and its saplings are being exhibited displaying cultivation technologies of the prospective local variety Haribhanga mango having huge export potential.

About 6,500 farmers have cultivated Haribhanga mango on 5,900 hectares of land in the district this year in addition to those cultivated in other areas of Rangpur division.

The mango is largely being cultivated in orchards in Podaganj, Khoragach, Ruposhi, Zarullapur, Rangatipara, Bangaon, Chaker Pather, Paikarerhat, Rukniganj, Tekani, Moyenpur, Kadamtola, Lalpukur, Shukurerhat, Tilakpara, Kashimpur and other villages in Mithapukur upazila.

The mango is also being cultivated in Badarganj, Sadar, Pirganj, Taraganj, Pirgachha, Kawnia and Gangachara upazilas of Rangpur and other areas of the region. – BSS
