The India-Bangladesh Chamber of Commerce and Industries (IBCCI) has installed its new committee, retaining only one Bangladeshi and five Indian members from the outgoing panel.

Moshiur Rahman, owner of Rahman Shipping Lines, assumed the presidency of the chamber, overseeing business relations between the two neighbouring countries.

He will be joined by Meherun Nessa Islam of Conference and Exhibition Management Services (CEMS) Limited as vice-president, and Amit Kumar Tiwari of Torrecid Bangladesh Limited as a director.

The chamber held its biennial election on Nov 27, with candidates running unopposed for the 2025-2027 term. The election schedule had been announced on Sept 11, reports bdnews24.com.

Moshiur succeeds Abdul Matlub Ahmed of Nitol Motors, a former president of the Federation of Bangladesh Chambers of Commerce and Industries (FBCCI).

Moshiur had previously served as a director on the 2019 committee. Meherun Nessa and Maulana Eyaqub Sharafi, newly elected directors, had also held director positions on the prior committee.

Mohammad Ali Deen, director of Runner Group and general secretary of the Bangladesh Automobile Assemblers and Manufacturers Association, and five others from the outgoing panel continue in the new term.

Following tradition, the 24-member executive committee consists of 12 Bangladeshi and 12 Indian representatives, with Mohammad Ali as the sole Bangladeshi member.

Leaders of the chamber said all current Bangladeshi business members had served in the two previous committees, which made them ineligible for consecutive re-election under the new rules introduced by the caretaker government, according to newly elected Director Eyaqub.

Two other incumbent directors, Subrata Dutta Gupta of Larsen & Toubro Limited and Mule Venkataratna Reddy of Venkris Energy Limited, continue as directors.

Other directors are:

  • Humayun Rashid Khan Pathan Rumen – AR Khan Pathan CNG Filling Station
  • Akhtarul Islam Rimon – Ayan International
  • Mohammad Sharfuddin Ali – Adam International
  • Habib Hasan Talukder – M/S Islam and Sons
  • Delower Hossain – Dr Lal Path Labs Bangladesh
  • Deepok Kumar Baral – DSM Commodities
  • ATM Altaf Hossain Lotus – SAFESEA Bangladesh
  • AKM Saifur Rahman – Wikitex-BD
  • Monsur Ahammed – MASHRUBA Medical Technologies
  • Dr Lokiat Ullah – Biopharma Limited
  • Mahboob Hossain Mirdah – RR-Imperial Electricals
  • Sourabh Biswas – Mahindra & Mahindra Limited
  • Rahul Kamboj – Tata Motors

The chamber’s annual general meeting is scheduled for Dec 30.

Abdul Wahed, joint general secretary of the current committee and managing director of Quality Enterprise, told bdnews24.com that the election process was completed after preparing the voter list and announcing the schedule.

Candidates who submitted unopposed nominations were elected, he added.

According to him, amendments to the chamber’s constitution prevent any member from holding the same position for more than two consecutive terms, which barred several former members from contesting this time.

The election commission was chaired by Shamsul Alam, with Abdul Mannaf and Kohinur Islam as members.
