IIDFC PLC has expressed deep condolences at the death of its founder and former Chairman, Md Matiul Islam.
“We are profoundly grieved by the demise of our Founder and Former Chairman, Mr. Md. Matiul Islam, FCA. Inna Lillahi wa inna ilayhi raji’un,” the company said in a condolence message on Thursday.
Widely known as the “Doyen of the Banking and Financial Sectors,” Mr Islam played a defining role in shaping Bangladesh’s financial landscape.
Beginning his career in the Pakistan Civil Service in 1952, he later became the First Finance Secretary of Bangladesh in 1972, leading the rebuilding of the financial sector and the nationalisation of banks.
Mr Islam founded key financial institutions such as AB Bank Ltd, International Leasing and Financial Services Ltd, National Housing Finance & Investment Ltd, and IIDFC PLC, and promoted the establishment of CRAB.
He held several distinguished positions, including Secretary of the Ministry of Industries, Alternate Executive Director at the World Bank, and senior roles in UNIDO in Vienna and India.
In recognition of his lifelong contributions, he received the DHL–The Daily Star Lifetime Achievement Award in 2011.
