ILO, NSU EHS+ Center collaborate on comprehensive certificate course in occupational safety, health

North South University (NSU), EHS+ Center announced a strategic collaboration with the International Labour Organization (ILO) recently to launch a comprehensive certification course on occupational safety and health (OSH).
With the support of ILO, this initiative aims to enhance workplace safety and health standards by equipping undergraduate students from varied disciplines, graduate engineers, architects, and professionals with essential knowledge and skills to ensure safer work environments, according to a press release.
Recently, an official in-person meeting between ILO and NSU occurred at the North South University. Mr Shahriar Iqbal Raj, assistant professor and operation director of the EHS+ Center at NSU, presided over the meeting. Dr Mahmud Akhter Shareef, professor and ILO-course coordinator at NSU, was also present.
Representing the ILO, Mr Ron Johnson, Technical Specialist for Labour Inspection and OSH, and Mr Md Satil Munzoor Al Mahmud, Senior Programme Officer for Occupational Safety and Health and Industrial Safety, participated in the discussions, focusing on both technical and overall project aspects “The ILO strongly supports the development of multidisciplinary safety courses to equip the next generation of safety professionals with essential knowledge and skills. By integrating NOSHTRI training, these courses will provide a well-rounded education in industrial safety and health management in future”, said Mr Md Satil Munzoor.
During the meeting, stakeholders reviewed the objectives and implementation strategies for the Comprehensive Certification Course in OSH. The discussions underscored the importance of structured training in fostering a workplace safety culture and ensuring compliance with regulatory standards. This initiative is expected to significantly contribute to national and global OSH frameworks by instilling safety awareness among young professionals and industry leaders.
“This collaboration represents a milestone in promoting occupational safety and health education in Bangladesh,” said Mr Shahriar Iqbal Raj. “By combining NSU’s academic expertise with ILO’s global experience, we are creating a program that not only strengthens industry knowledge but also prepares professionals to implement best practices in workplace safety.”
The course will offer hands-on training, theoretical insights, and professional guidance, ensuring a comprehensive understanding of OSH standards. By aligning industry practices with international safety protocols, this initiative underscores the shared commitment of ILO and NSU EHS+ Center to advancing workplace safety education.
