A tax commissioner said at a workshop on Tuesday that the government's new income tax law made it mandatory to submit tax returns for all, including government employees, for receiving more than 40 services.

"Under the new law, taxpayers who will fail to file returns by November 30 will be denied tax exemption and tax refund benefits," said Tax commissioner of Chattogram Tax Zone 3, Ikhtiaruddin Md. Mamun, while speaking as a guest of honour in the workshop on 'Personal Income Tax'.

The Chittagong Chamber of Commerce and Industry (CCCI) and SMAC Advisory Services Ltd. organized the programme at the Bangabandhu Conference Hall of the World Trade Center of CCCI.

CCCI President Omar Hajjaz presided over the programme. Among others, Sonali Bank Deputy General Manager Khandkar Mazharul Kabir, Senior Partner of MM Rahman & Company Siddharth Barua, Vice President of the Institute of Chartered Accountants of Bangladesh Md. Zahirul Islam and Chittagong Taxes Bar Association President Md. Nur Hossain were also present.

Omar Hajjaz said taxes provided by the public were one of the driving forces behind the development of the country and Padma Bridge was the biggest example of it.

Besides, the Bangabandhu Tunnel was recently inaugurated by the Prime Minister, and half of the total project was funded with public money, he added.

People should be aware of income tax payments, he said.
