India bans import of Bangladeshi jute products, woven fabrics through land ports

India has imposed a ban on the import of several jute products and woven fabrics from Bangladesh through all land ports.

According to the new directive, these items will now only be allowed to enter India via the Nhava Sheva seaport in Maharashtra.

The decision was announced on Friday in New Delhi by the Directorate General of Foreign Trade (DGFT), amid growing strain in trade relations between the two neighbouring countries, bdnews24.com reports.

The DGFT said the restriction will not apply to Bangladeshi goods in transit to Nepal or Bhutan through Indian territory.

These items, however, cannot be re-exported to India via Nepal or Bhutan.

The list of restricted items includes flax tow and waste (including yarn waste and garnetted stock), jute and other bast fibres, single and multiple jute yarns, woven fabrics or flax, and unbleached woven fabrics of jute.

According to The Times of India, this is the third such restriction on Bangladeshi goods by New Delhi in recent months.

Earlier, on May 17, the Narendra Modi government also banned the import of Bangladeshi garments, processed food items, and several other products through land ports.
