The government of Japan has extended a grant of US$397,335 (around Tk 48.2 million) to two Bangladeshi organisations to support improved health services and primary education initiatives.
Under the Grant Assistance for Grass-roots Human Security Projects (GGHSP), the Garo Baptist Convention Christian Health Project has been awarded US$83,827 for the “Expansion of Medical Facilities and Provision of Equipment in Joyramkura Village, Mymensingh District”.
The Asian University for Women has received US$313,508 for the “Construction of the Elementary Education Programme Building at the Asian University for Women in Chattogram”.
Japan’s Ambassador to Bangladesh, Saida Shinichi, signed the grant contracts with the respective organisations at the Embassy of Japan on Monday, according to a press release.
The health project will install a central oxygen system and construct a post-operative ward at a 50-bed hospital in Joyramkura to improve surgical care, particularly for women and children in the north-eastern border areas.
Meanwhile, the new education building at the Asian University for Women will provide primary education for girls from low-income families in grades 1 to 5.
Since 1989, Japan has supported 225 NGO projects in Bangladesh through the GGHSP programme, providing grants worth around US$18 million to strengthen grassroots human security.
