Jewellers raise gold prices in Bangladesh

Local jewellers on Sunday revised gold prices upward to adjust with the change in the international market amid the COVID-19 outbreak.

The price of hallmarked 22-carat gold has been fixed at Tk 6,300 per gram, which is Tk 130 up from Tk 6,170 previously, Bangladesh Jewellers Samity (BJS) said in a statement on Saturday.

The revised prices have been effective from the same day (Saturday).

As per the new pricing, per bhori (11.664 grams) gold will be sold at Tk 73,483, which is an increase of Tk 1,516 than Tk 71,967 two months ago.

Explaining the rationale behind the increase the yellow metal, the BJS statement said gold price went up in the international market due to various economic crises amid the coronavirus outbreak.

“Along with this, gold dealers cannot import gold bars due to the closure of international flights, customs related complications during import (material tax rebates) and other official hitches,” it said.

It also said per gram hallmarked 21-carat gold’s price increased to Tk 6,030 from Tk 5,900 and 18-carat variety’s rose to Tk 5,280 from Tk 5,150 previously.

Meanwhile, the value of per gram silver of all varieties remained unchanged. Such as per gram 22-carat (hallmarked) silver at Tk 130, per gram 21-carat at Tk 123 and 18-carat at Tk 105.

The trade body requested all its members to follow the new price chart.

Earlier, the market price of the metals was decreased on June 20.
