Traders at Karwan Bazar on Monday made an announcement to sell several essential items at lower profit margins during the holy month of Ramadan.

The announcement which aims to help stabilise prices of daily necessities such as lemons, edible oil, and sugar was made at a press conference organised by Islamiya Samity Kitchen Market at Karwan Bazar.

Newly-elected Member of Parliament for Dhaka-12 constituency, Saiful Alam Milon, was present at the press conference.

At the briefing, traders announced price cuts on several products including lemons by Tk 2.0 per piece, edible oil by Tk 1.0 per litre, sugar by Tk 1.0 a kg, chickpeas by Tk 2.0 a kg, a 200-gram Tang pack by Tk 5.0, beef by Tk 30 a kg, and Miniket rice by Tk 1.0 per kg.

Saiful Islam Sujan, General Secretary of the Karwan Bazar Pakka Market Aratdar Samity, said they buy lemons from Srimangal for Tk 11-12 per piece.

After sorting into five categories, prices range from Tk 3.0 to Tk 4.0 for small lemons to Tk 17 for large ones. Under the new decision, each lemon will be sold Tk 2.0 cheaper, meaning a Tk 17 lemon will now cost Tk 15.

Abu Bakkar Siddique, proprietor of Akhi Enterprise, said they sell a five-litre bottle of edible oil for Tk 920, while the printed price is Tk 950. From now on, they will give an additional discount of Tk 5.0 per bottle.

Belayet Hossain, Organising Secretary of the Kitchen Market, said packaged sugar with a printed price of Tk 105 was previously sold at Tk 102, but now it will be sold at Tk 101 per kg.
