LafargeHolcim Bangladesh and CUET host National Concrete Festival to champion sustainable construction

A two-day National Concrete Festival was held recently at the Chittagong University of Engineering and Technology (CUET), aiming to ignite innovation and promote sustainability in the construction sector.

The festival was organised by the American Concrete Institute (ACI), a CUET student chapter which provided an engaging platform for the future engineers to showcase their academic knowledge, creativity and technical skills in real-world challenges, according to a media release. 

LafargeHolcim Bangladesh PLC, one of the leading building material solution provider company in the country, partnered with CUET in this landmark initiative, reinforcing its commitment to embedding sustainability in the mindset of tomorrow’s construction professionals.

The festival featured a series of competitive events, including Truss Making, Mortar Workability, Sustainable Concrete Solutions, and a Photography Contest. These activities encouraged participants to merge theory with practice, spotlighting their ingenuity and engineering prowess.

A separate technical seminar added depth to the festival, where Fakhruddin Md. Khan, Head of Technical Services at LafargeHolcim Bangladesh, delivered an insightful keynote on innovative building solutions.

He elaborated on the company’s Net Zero ambition, emphasising the critical role of CO₂ reduction in reshaping construction practices for a greener future.

In his closing remarks, CUET Vice-Chancellor Prof. Dr. Mahmud Abdul Matin Bhuiyan underscored the importance of sustainable construction for Bangladesh.

He called for enhanced innovation in building materials and urged students to showcase their talents on global platforms.

Six teams and three individuals were recognised for their outstanding performance, receiving awards and accolades from the Vice-Chancellor. Prof. Dr. Aysha Akter, Head of CUET's Civil Engineering Department; Prof. Dr. G M Sadiqul Islam, Faculty Advisor of ACI Student Chapter-CUET; Former Vice-Chancellor Prof. Dr. Jahangir Alam; and Fakhruddin Md. Khan of LafargeHolcim Bangladesh were present during the award-giving ceremony.
