Mehghna Group of Industries (MGI) has denied using sulphur in the conglomerate’s sugar production process.
In a statement issued in response to a report published in The Financial Express on November 26, group General Manager Kazi Md Mohiuddin said, "We do not use sulphur anywhere in our production process.”
The Financial Express ran the report under the caption “Court orders arrest of bosses of Nestlé Bangladesh, MGI, over 'substandard KitKat, sugar” following the order of a Safe Food Court magistrate handed down on Monday.
Magistrate Nusrat Sahara Bithi issued the warrant for the arrest of the managing director of Nestlé Bangladesh for marketing low-quality KitKat chocolate, the MGI chairman for supplying adulterated and unsafe sugar, and the SA Group chairman for selling substandard powdered milk.
The MGI general manager said, “…the statement about the presence of sulphur in sugar is not understandable to us."
He explained that the company imports sugar from Brazil, the world's largest exporter. “We only do carbonation here. So, there is actually no scope for us to compromise on quality.”
Mohiuddin emphasised that MGI maintains all regulations set by the Bangladesh Standards and Testing Institution (BSTI).
"So, we are unable to understand how these (allegations) arose. Nevertheless, we will submit all evidence to the court as per the court order," he stated.
