All mobile phone shops across Bangladesh are set to close after the Mobile Business Community Bangladesh (MBCB), a body that represents smartphone and gadget traders, announced a nationwide shutdown.

MBCB leaders said the shutdown is a protest against the detention of Sumash Tech CEO Abu Sayeed Pias, who also serves as MBCB’s secretary.

The declaration was made at a press conference at the Dhaka Reporters Unity on Wednesday.

They warned that if Pias is not released by today, they will begin a stronger countrywide movement.

According to family members, plainclothes detectives picked up Pias from his residence in  Mirpur 1  around 3 am on Tuesday.

His wife, Sumaiya Chowdhury, said members of the Detective Branch took him away and seized his mobile phone.

MBCB leaders stated that the incident has instilled fear among traders. They demanded an immediate explanation from the authorities and the quick release of Pias, saying the business community is deeply concerned by his sudden detention.
