Multipurpose Bay Terminal construction to start in mid-2024: CPA Chairman

Chattogram Port Authority (CPA) Chairman Rear Admiral Mohammad Sohail on Wednesday said that the construction of the Multipurpose Bay Terminal is expected to start in the middle of next year.

Pointing out that the Bay Terminal is no longer a dream, the Port Chairman said, Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina has already unveiled the master plan of the Bay Terminal recently.

“Abu Dhabi Port Group has already submitted an investment proposal of 1 billion dollars for the construction of the multipurpose terminal in joint venture with Chattogram Port Authority. The agreement is expected to be signed next year with PSA Singapore and DP World for the construction and operation of the Bay Container Terminals 1 and 2,” the port Chairman told the journalists at a press conference at Bandar Bhaban auditorium in Chattogram.

He said another plan has also been taken to construct a gas and oil terminal as the fourth terminal of Bay Terminal with the aim of ensuring the country’s energy security.

“A private company has already proposed an investment of 3.4 billion dollars for this terminal. Denmark’s APM Terminals has proposed to build the Laldia Container Terminal, which is being processed as a Public Private Partnership project. Stating that Chattogram Port will be a smart port in 2024, he said adding that the Chattogram Port is in the three million clubs despite the global recession”.

He said Chattogram Port has been handled three million four thousand 505 TEUs of containers till December 25 last. “It will be capable of handling 3.1 million TEUs of containers by the end of the year. Which is same as last year,” he added.

The CPA Chairman hoped that the cargo handling will exceed 12 crore tonnes this year.

Port Secretary Omar Faruk, Project Director of Matarbari Sea Port and Port Deputy Conservator Captain Faridul Alam, among others members of the port were present during the conference.
