Bangladesh's national gas grid Saturday started receiving around 8.0 million cubic feet per day (mmcfd) of natural gas from onshore Srikail-5 hydrocarbon well that boosts domestic fuel supply at crisis time.
State-run Bangladesh Petroleum Exploration and Production Company Limited (BAPEX) drilled the well during last September- to - January period at a cost of around Tk 1.32 billion.
State Minister for the Ministry of Power, Energy and Mineral Resources (MPEMR) Anindya Islam Amit inaugurated the facility at a function on the well premises.
According to BAPEX, this development well is expected to supply gas for around 10 years.
The well has an estimated natural gas reserve of 40 billion cubic feet (Bcf), of which around 28 Bcf is considered extractable.
Previously, gas supply from the well began as test run on March 10--in the wake of a search for fuels from home and abroad amid supply disruption for the Middle East war.
Value of the recoverable gas would be worth Tk 68.32 billion, if calculated based on the basis of current price of imported liquefied natural gas (LNG).
The value would be around Tk 18.14 billion if assessed at domestic gas price.
Country's overall natural gas output is currently hovering around 2,560mmcfd, inclusive of re-gasified imported LNG of around 842mmcfd, as on March 14, 2026.
